Mr. Sumiya graduated from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in the year 2000. Over the last 20 years he has had a practice allowing him exposure to many areas of law. His primary focus has been Family Law and over several years he has represented clients in matters of divorces, child custody and access, child and spousal support and property division. He has also helped clients with Protection Orders and restraining orders. He has represented clients in Child Welfare cases. He has often effectively represented clients in court and has also negotiated good settlements in cases. He is dedicated to try to advise you of your rights and represent your interests in a legal matter.
Mr. Sumiya has further experience drafting Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Personal Directives. He has in the past represented clients in Criminal Court. He also has some past experience with Real Estate law. Several years ago he did some work in the field of immigration law.
All of this means he has a varied but family focused experience which could be applied to a client’s overall needs.
In law school he was the First Year Representative (19971998), Vice-Chair (1998-1999) and Chair (1999-2000) of the Canadian Bar Association, University of Alberta Branch.
He has been active in charity. He has participated in the Terry Fox Run to raise money for research to fight cancer, for 36 of the 40 years it has been in existence. He has regularly participated in the CIBC Run for a Cure to raise money to fight breast cancer since 1998 and he was a Run for the Cure Board member, fundraising committee in 2017.
